I rate the condition of the unit as excellent as I have taken the best possible care of it.
The Coolscan can scan up to 4000dpi; I used 3000dpi and crunched to a final size of 2160 pixels on the image vertical(note 4K TVs have 2160 on their vertical). The Coolscan has a "multiplicity" of post scanning manipulations and I consistently used a number of them. It also has some very complex options that only a professional would attempt to use. I always used the Nikon Scan application when trying to bring up shadows on faces. Otherwise, I bounced between Nikon Scan and a great program called VueScan that I operated under Ubuntu Linux. Nikon Scan works on XP (which is what I use), but may take some doing to get it to work with Windows 7.
I used the Coolscan to scan approximately 2,400 35mm images, both slides and film strips. The MA-21 is used with slides. The SA-21 is used with film strips with the standard perforation pitch(spacing from perforation to perforation). It can batch scan up to 6 images per strip and was fun to use because of its automation. I also had 35mm film strips which had a "non-standard" pitch, of which the pitch equaled the repeating image dimension distance. The FH-3(in conjunction with the SA-21) was essential for scanning this type of film, although the FH-3 is not easy to use. So I flatbed scanned the film strips, selected what pictures I wanted to keep, then used the Coolscan.
I have done everything practical to keep the interior of the unit clean to include: covering it and the adapter units when not in use, meticulously wiping and blowing clean both slides and film strips before inserting, not allowing my wife to do any vacuum cleaning or dusting in the room when I was scanning.
